Media coverage for SAR response and SAR prevention. SAR prevention is KEY. Educating the public about where to find the helpful resources for safe outdoor recreation, which in turn increases awareness, is critical and needs to be shared in ‘every’ media story. Most media stories cover (and at times sensationalize) response details, frustrations felt by responders and recently show the rising trend of BC SAR incidents, however what’s absolutely necessary to also share is the easily accessible information to reduce the number and severity of these incidents. We started the AdventureSmart program in BC over 13 years ago (now a national program based on our Provincial success) and its primary objective is to reduce incidents and severity of. Both response details AND prevention resources need to be included in every news story aired.
